Natural Hair Textures – What are they and what do they look like?

One thing is for certain: everyone has a hair type and texture. Have you ever wondered what they are and what they look like? Knowing your hair type and texture is essential in caring properly for your hair.

There are four major types of hair.

Type 1: Straight hair can range from thin to thick. It has a natural shine and luster due to the natural oils from the scalp being able to easily and fully coat your strands.

Type 2: Wavy hair can range from beach to fluffy, with multiple bumps and bends in it. This type of hair usually is one of the easiest types to manipulate for styling purposes.

Type 3: Curly hair, the strands with bounce, volume and spring to them. There may be wavy strands somewhere in between.

Type 4: Coily/kinky hair: a mixture of s-shape and z-shape strands, making it the most fragile, dry and damage prone of all hair types but also the most versatile.

Each type has subtypes based on how loose or tight one’s curl pattern is. They are lettered A-C. See chart below:

When we speak of curl pattern, we usually start from type 2 hair on, due to type 1 hair being completely straight.

However, a key thing to remember is that everyone has more than one hair type in their hair. No one has all 4B or 2A hair. There could be a mixture of textures in your hair that are dependent on hair care, styling and genetics.

Are you able to identify your hair type? As mentioned before, knowing your hair type can help you care for your hair in a way that is specific to you. Each hair type requires a different method of everyday maintenance. This includes cleansing, moisturizing and styling your hair.

No matter what type of hair you have on your head, remember that it is your crown and you should wear it LAUDE-ly and proudly.
